NEW ENERGY STANDARD FOR MANAGEMENT – ISO 5001:2011
The International Organization for Standardization, (ISO) recognized the importance in managing energy and created ISO 50001-2011 to be an International Standard for energy Management. It was created by the International Organization for Standardization. The ISO 50001 2011 energy management system standard has been published on June 15, 2011. It is predicted that it will affect up to 60% of the world's energy consumption. In addition it could be a catalyst to become an important catalyst for trade across the globe to boost efficiency in industrial energy. ISO 50001 -2011 describes the conditions an organization must fulfill to set up and implement, monitor and improve its energy management program. This system lets an organization have an efficient approach that will ensure continuous improvement in energy performance. It addresses energy consumption and uses, including the documentation and measurement. This standard will lead to an improvement in energy expenses, greenhouse gas emissions, and other environmental impact through the efficient control of energy. ISO 50001:2011 will establish an international system for commercial, industrial or institution-based facilities or entire companies, to manage their energy, including procurement and usage. It can be used by any type of organization, regardless of size or cultural background. The ISO 50001:2011 certification will demonstrate that a plant or company has sustainable EnMS in place, has established an energy usage baseline, and has committed to continually improve its energy efficiency.

The ISO 50001 :2011 Framework includes both managerial and technical aspects that are expected to make the Standard more acceptable to the general public. The Standard will be based on the continual improvement and PDCA approaches utilised in ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 to provide the possibility of integration and compatibility. ENTERING ISO50001:2011. UNIDO held a conference with experts in March 2007. This resulted in the submission to the ISO Central Secretariat of a formal request to work on an international standard for energy management. The Technical Management Board of ISO approved in February 2008 the formation of a new group (PC 242 Energy Management) for the creation of the new ISO Management System Standard for Energy.

The committee for the project is comprised up of five observing countries as well as 35 other countries taking part. The Associacao Brasileira de Normas Tecnicas (ABNT) and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) together serve as the Secretariat. The U.S. Department of Energy (USA Council for EnergyEfficient Manufacturing) and the U.S. Council for EnergyEfficient Manufacturing (USI) are in support of ANSI's involvement in the development of the standard. The initial ISO/PC 242 Committee was established in Washington, D.C., in September of 2008. The committee met again in Brazil in March 2009. People who have worked in companies that have a good understanding of management systems (quality, safety and environmental) understand the process of developing a management structure and how it fits into the company's corporate culture. These experts usually have very little to no experience in energy efficiency. Contrary to this, industrial energy efficiency experts are highly trained in energy efficiency. However, they are trained and focused on the creation and execution of energy efficiency projects, without the context of a management system. A lot of education is necessary to effectively apply standards for energy management. It is necessary to create not only internal capacity within the organisations seeking to apply the standard, but also external capacity from knowledgeable experts in order to create an effective implementation structure. Because it is a combination of energy efficiency and management systems the knowledge required to provide technical assistance for energy management are unique.
